PHYSIOXTRA CREATED A TIGHT TEAM OF PERSONAL LEADERS THROUGHOUT 2022-2023

In 2004, PhysioXtra’s Founder Kath Chigwidden won the Telstra Business Women’s Award in the Westpac Group Business Owners category, and PhysioXtra has since won many Local Business Awards over the years. PhysioXtra’s success has enabled them to achieve rapid growth and industry leadership in Physiotherapy.

Highly qualified therapists delivering exceptional outcomes is their mission. They’ve cultivated a team of professionals to work with clients to get the movement they need for the life they love. This mission was behind the choice to deliver Thrive@Work across PhysioXtra’s South Australian teams.

They wanted to develop personal leadership skills in staff so they could provide excellence in service to each customer who walks through their doors. As an allied health business, it is vital that the team walk the talk and are role models to the public – personal leadership skills provide the ability to put teams in the driver’s seat of life, empowering them to be not only excellent physiotherapists, but great team members, friends, and family too.

“Since engaging with Generation Thrive, we have seen our new leaders grow in the business which is allowing PhysioXtra to innovate and grow.”

Robert Bowden, the Director, has a keen interest in workplace culture, and with publications in this space, he shows a passion for innovation. Robert has a continued commitment to PhysioXtra, working to drive excellence and create an elite employee and customer experience.

In 2022, PhysioXtra’s first cohort graduated from the program. The program delivered such positive results, that they decided to provide another fortunate cohort with the same opportunity.

Why Generation Thrive?

Ultimately, health professionals have a responsibility to be good role models. By setting a good example, you can help to improve the health of clients, and your circle of influence.

“This program is a really important initiative of the PhysioXtra Group to ensure we can stay true to our values of being Industry Leaders, creating a great team environment building strong relationships, and being authentic.”

Personal leadership matters?

At Generation Thrive, we see skills development and workplace wellbeing as interrelated, as the acquisition of enterprise and soft skills such as self-leadership, communication, critical thinking, problem-solving, emotional, and social intelligence, goal planning, and time management lead to individuals managing their own emotional, social, and psychological wellbeing – all of which are good for business.

Our programs support participants to create a healthy Locus of Control where they demonstrate personal leadership by learning how to take responsibility for the outcomes that are within their control and managing responses to things that are not.

Research demonstrates that an internal Locus of Control is associated with:

  • Higher levels of job satisfaction, job motivation, and job performance

  • Increased self-control

  • Greater academic success, and more perseverance in the face of difficulty

  • Enhanced psychological and physical health.

Locus of Control outcomes of PhysioXtra’s most recent Thrive@Work participants:

Personal leadership is important in workplaces because it allows individuals to take charge of their development and success. It is about having the courage to speak up, take risks, and learn from mistakes. Personal leaders are also able to motivate and inspire others, create a positive work environment, and achieve their goals.

Here are some of the benefits of personal leadership in the workplace and why PhysioXtra chose Generation Thrive for their workplace training:

Increased productivity and performance: Personal leaders are more likely to be productive and perform at a high level because they are motivated and driven to succeed. They are also more likely to take initiative and go the extra mile.

Improved decision-making: Personal leaders are better at making decisions because they can think critically and weigh all options. They are also more likely to take calculated risks and make decisions that are in the best interests of the team or organisation.

Enhanced problem-solving skills: Personal leaders are better at solving problems because they can think creatively and come up with innovative solutions. They are also more likely to be persistent and not give up easily.

Stronger communication skills: Personal leaders are better communicators because they can clearly articulate their ideas and thoughts. They are also more likely to be open to feedback and be willing to listen to others.

Increased employee engagement: Personal leaders create a more positive and engaging work environment because they are supportive and encouraging. They are also more likely to be fair and equitable in their treatment of employees.

Improved morale and motivation: Personal leaders boost morale and motivation among employees because they are inspiring and motivating. They are also more likely to create a sense of purpose and belonging among employees.

Why mental health matters?

By providing personal leadership skills training, workplaces can take a preventative approach, supporting staff to take care of their wellbeing at and outside of work. PhysioXtra knows the importance of creating a culture of continuous learning within their workplace. This means encouraging their employees to take on new challenges and learn new things, both on the job and through formal training programs such as Thrive@Work. By investing in employee training, all businesses can create a healthier and more productive workforce.

There are also financial benefits to investing in the wellbeing of your staff. According to Beyond Blue, Poor mental health costs the Australian economy from A$12.2 to A$22.5 billion each year. Research has shown that investment in mental health has a positive return on investment. This can range from an average of A$2.30 upwards for each dollar invested.

Testimonials from PhysioXtra’s Thrive@Work Participants

“The content was good, very easy to take in. I felt like overall, it applied to anyone’s scenario. The 1:1 coaching sessions were fantastic. I had a great coach (Brad Tellis) who tailored everything to me very well. He really listened to my concerns and what I wanted to achieve and helped lead me to discover how to manage these better myself. He helped me implement long-term actions that will help me grow and maintain my happiness long term.

— Andrew, Physiotherapist

“The program has brought many things "front of mind" for me. It has taught me to slow down and conceptualise things before diving into things too quickly. I am taking accountability for my own actions and have confidence when doing it. The 1:1 coaching sessions were very individualised and helpful.”

— Oscar, Physiotherapist

The Thrive@Work program has provided me with better insight into myself and the possibilities that life can provide. It highlights how in control you can be of your own mental, physical, and successful self.
